A Sense of Light and Darkness
Project Type
Black and White - Photography
Date
January 2025
A Sense of Light and Darkness draws inspiration from Impressionism, an era in art history renowned for its focus on light and color. Impressionism encourages both artists and viewers to prioritize the emotions evoked by the composition and lighting over the content being depicted. Translating the essence of Impressionism from painting to photography demands an abstract mindset and a keen eye for contrast. When I was introduced to the concept of A Sense of Light and Darkness, I found myself wanting to play around with the concept. I have little experience in photography, so I saw this as a chance to delve into the abstract nature of the medium. While some of my photographs suggest storytelling, many emphasize capturing glimpses of refracted light or the shadows cast by manmade objects. One of my favorite artists from the Impressionist era is Claude Monet, whose habit of revisiting the same location day after day to paint the light, rather than the scenery, inspired me to return to familiar spaces to capture contrast instead of objects.
