A Sense of Place
Project Type
Collage
Date
February 2025
A Sense of Place draws inspiration from Cubism, an era in art history in which artists deconstructed and reconstructed objects to understand and express truth in the abstract. While the project wasn’t literally cubism, it involved using multiple images, frames, and layers to create photos that resulted in a feeling one might get from Cubist-type works. When presented with the concept of this project, I was a little bit lost on what to do. There were so many different options and stylistic choices I could make. What conveyed the story of me? Places make me, people make me, I am a nesting doll of all my former selves. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque are often credited with being the creators of Cubism and are the most impactful artists of this art movement. While none of my compositions ended up taking the form of really rigid shapes, I was inspired by their use of gradients within the harsh geometric shapes. The first set of photos is a series of portrait cutouts largely inspired by my love of theater and the places I've called home. The second set of photos is inspired by collaging of old and new photos, reflecting the shared locations and people I'm around. The third and final set of photos, titled HOME, are inverted collaged pictures of the literal places I call home.
